1164: Becket leaves Britain
The quarrel between the Archbishop of Canterbury and King Henry II had come to a head when Thomas Becket was ordered to appear in Northampton to stand trial on several trivial matters. The charges were really an excuse to ruin Becket, and he at last responded by saying, "I will be judged by our Lord the Pope alone, for he alone is competent to judge me and to him, in your presence, I appeal." He then fled to Flanders, and stayed away from England for 6 years.

WHO DIED

1148: Saint Malachy
Archbishop and papal legate, Malachy is considered one of the most significant figures in 12th-century Irish church reform.
