Simplicius was pope when the last Roman Emperor of the west, Romulus Augustulus, was deposed by Odoacer in 476 (a turning point considered by some to be the start of the Middle Ages). He worked to defend the Italian peoples against barbarian invasion, and had to deal with the Monophysites heresy and the resulting schism.
