The foremost scholar of the Carolingian Renaissance, Alcuin of York had enormous influence over the development of the Roman Catholic liturgy. His presence at Charlemagne's Palace School energized the atmosphere of learning, and as abbot at the Abbey of Tours, he encouraged the use of the Carolingian Miniscule script that was the precursor of modern Roman typefaces.
