Medieval Life Videos

Wednesday March 12, 2008
In the past, you've seen me complain (not too gratingly, I hope!) about the inaccuracies of popular historical film and, less forgivable, documentaries of the Middle Ages. Thousands of dollars have gone into the production of some truly execrable programs that purport to offer an accurate window to the past, only to perpetuate some of the worst misconceptions medievalists have to deal with (THC's The Dark Ages, anyone?). Now, using only his computer, some gorgeous PD images and a little evocative music, the YouTube filmmaker "slavophile1" counters some of those time-worn misconceptions with short, simple videos that are all highly enjoyable.

As of this date slavophile1 has posted six "Medieval Life" videos, all less than five minutes apiece:

These videos are all fairly introductory, and for the medieval history student, there's little new to learn here -- but they're still worth a look for the images and music (although not everyone will like every musical choice). However, it's a great way to catch someone's interest in the Middle Ages. And, for those of you who are new to the subject and would like to learn more, check out these resources:
