Alexander Nevsky
This significant film by Sergei Eisenstein is just as interesting for its anti-Nazi propaganda as it is for its stunning battle sequence. A marvelous piece of cinema from a great Russian film-maker.

The Agony and the Ecstasy
The first ten minutes is worth the price for the gorgeous views of Renaissance art and architecture, and though less than perfectly accurate, the story is absorbing and the performances strong. It's interesting to note the dark colors of the ceiling, as the film was made before restoration revealed Michelangelo's masterpiece to be dazzlingly vivid.

Becket
Fine performances by Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton as well as an Oscar-winning screenplay bring the story of Henry II and Thomas Á Becket powerfully to life. Superb.

Braveheart
Mel Gibson directed and starred in this Academy Award-winner about Scottish hero William Wallace. Although some artistic license is taken, the film is largely accurate and beautifully captures the atmosphere of 13th-century Britain.

The Lion in Winter
Henry II must choose which of his three surviving sons will succeed him, and a vicious verbal battle ensues between himself and his strong-willed queen. Katharine Hepburn won an Oscar® for her portrayal of Eleanor.

A Man for All Seasons
Paul Scofield won an Academy Award® for a profound study of Thomas More in this fascinating and forceful examination of integrity and politics. Also received Oscars® for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Passion of Joan of Arc
This 1928 silent masterpiece focuses on the trial of Joan in what is unmistakably the most astonishing and compelling film about the Maid ever produced. Beautifully remastered and accompanied by an awe-inspiring score by Richard Einhorn and the Voices of Light, this is a must-see for anyone interested in Joan, in the path of conscience, or in classic cinema.

The Return of Martin Guerre
The true story of a callow peasant who abandons his family and returns years later a changed man. But is he really Martin Guerre? This French classic realistically portrays 14th-century Europe in atmosphere and detail.
