959:

Edgar becomes King of All England

Already king of the Mercians and Northumbrians, when Edgar became king of the West Saxons he was thenceforward considered king of all England.

965:

John XIII becomes Pope

Chosen by Emperor Otto I, John was pious and learned, but the Roman nobles opposed him as the emperor's choice and kidnapped him. Otto rescued him, and Pope John XIII went on to crown Otto II and marry him to Theophano.

1404:

Boniface IX

The second pope in Rome during the Western Schism, Boniface was unable to end the breach and increased hostility with his attempts to raise money in order to combat the antipopes.
