The Dark Age Quiz
The Visigoths, like several other Germanic tribes, had been foederati of the Roman Empire; and, like several other Germanic tribes, they had failed to receive the agreed-upon compensation for fighting for the Romans. Under the leadership of Alaric, whose negotiations with the Emperor fell through, they attacked Italy on several occasions, sacking the city of Rome in 410.
Alaric kept his men from plundering (much), but this was the first successful attack on the city of Rome in nearly 800 years. The incident, which is sometimes considered the beginning of the Middle Ages, had a powerful effect on many Roman citizens.
Rome would be sacked again in 455 by the Vandals, who did much more damage.
