The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle

This text is from the 1823 Everyman Edition,
with additional entries from the 1847 edition.

The electronic text was originally edited, proofed, and prepared
by Douglas B. Killings (DeTroyes@AOL.COM), July 1996.
Further edits and preparations were made by Melissa Snell.

About the Format

The main text is that translated by Rev. James Ingram. Entries that are inset from the left margin are segments translated by Dr. J.A. Giles.

About the Annotations

The annotations are James Ingram's; please keep in mind that they are from the early 19th century, and recent scholarship has revealed some of his conclusions to be inaccurate. However, the notes still provide a useful guide to the intricacies of the Chronicle.

The public-domain electronic text I acquired had an error in the numbering of the footnotes; either a note from Ingram's original text was left out or a number was skipped. I have renumbered the notes to run continuously, and they may differ from the 1823 publication, a print copy of which I currently lack.
