Girolamo Savonarola
Domenican friar and reformer, Savonarola was a righteous voice in Florence at a time when corruption was prevalent in Italy. He preached prophetic speeches, made enemies of Pope Alexander VI and the Duke of Milan, and governed Florence himself for a short time in the form of a democratic republic. Savonarola was viciously persecuted, tried, tortured, and sentenced to death by papal commissioners on apparently fabricated evidence.
