Definition:

The assembly at which Pope Urban II delivered a rousing speech calling for the First Crusade was the Council of Clermont. Taking place in November of 1095, the Council of Clermont was convened for the purposes of addressing matters of Church reform. Urban delivered his speech at the closing of the council, purportedly ending his oration with the words Deus vult ("God wills it"), which became the battle cry of the Crusaders.
