The 1911 Encyclopedia

By Melissa Snell, About.com

For the general education and entertainment of our readers, I offer here at the Medieval History site a selection of articles from the 1911 edition of an excellent encyclopedia. While this material was written nearly a century ago, and many decades of scholarship have uncovered new facts and overturned old theories since then, you'll find a substantial portion of the historical information remains surprisingly accurate and relevant today.

Also, keep in mind that because the work was written so long ago, the point of view displayed in some of these articles may reflect outdated attitudes that could be viewed today as "politically incorrect." Remember that such attitudes do not necessarily invalidate the facts contained in the articles, nor do they reflect the viewpoints of About or of your Guide.

This edition is out of copyright here in the United States, and the original publisher was not and is not involved in any way with creating, editing or distributing these documents. All articles are in the public domain, and you may copy, download, print and distribute this work as you see fit.

Every effort has been made to present this text accurately and cleanly, but no guarantees are made against errors. Neither your Guide nor About.com may be held liable for any problems you experience with the text version or with any electronic form of these documents.

I hope you enjoy your explorations of this fascinating piece of our scholarly past. Thus far, entries beginning with the following letters are available:

    A - Abbadides, Agincourt, Aimoin . . .
    B - Baliol, Bede, Bogomils . . .
