By , About.com Guide

Peter Abelard was an illustrious philosopher and teacher at the University of Paris; Heloise was the young woman he tutored and seduced. Their passionate love affair had tragic consequences, and comes to us through their letters. There are no contemporary portraits of either individual, but they have inspired artists through the centuries.
